Bee crazy with a dash of sugar

Friday 15th June 2018

'In the last 5 years the bee population has dropped by 1/3. If bees were to disappear from the face of the earth, humans would have just 4 years left to live’. David Attenborough 2018

This time of year bees can look like they’re dead or dying on the floor. In most cases they’re actually really tired and can’t muster up the energy to return to the hive!

If you find a bee that looks like it’s struggling- the RSPB suggested mixing two tablespoons of white granulated sugar with a tablespoon of water and place on a spoon for a bee to reach. Do not add any more water otherwise the bee could drown.

Val Osborne, Head of RSPB Wildlife Enquiries, says: “Busy as a bee is a true saying – bees are working to save the planet and they really do deserve our help. We’ve been getting even more calls about bees than ever this year as most people have read that they are in trouble. Many people keep seeing bees lying on the ground and assume they are dead but chances are they are having a rest. Much like us, a sugary drink could boost their energy levels and a simple sugar and water combination will be a welcome treat.”
