Getting tough in Glendalough

A team from Hammerson Ireland take on a challenging charity hike

On the Friday 21st September, Tony Mongey, Senior Project Manager, along with five Hammerson colleagues took part in a hike for CRMF Crumlin.

Tony admitted perhaps the team was not the most prepared, as they hadn’t undertaken any training and hike was tough. Nevertheless, the team “went for it”: starting together and finishing together. Talk about going the extra mile for team bonding!

Along with around 80 other walkers and 20 volunteers, the team hiked 15 km through the stunning backdrop of Glendalough, County Wicklow. From the pictures taken on the hike it easy to see why Glendalough is known as God’s Backyard. It also easy to see why it would not make for

the easiest walking location. The route took the team through a varied landscape from forests to lakes, including a 45-minute continuous uphill hike.

The team raised a staggering €17,000 for the CMRF Crumlin. On top of this, Hammerson’s Charities Committee matched the funds raised up to €250 for each Hammerson employee, therefore donating an extra €1,500 to the charity.

The money raised was donated to CMRF Crumlin, a children’s charity which funds initiatives, research, equipment and projects with three main aims:

  • Saving young lives by funding critical research and equipment
  • Supporting small victories everyday for children living with illness by improving their quality of life
  • Creating brighter days for sick children and their families by funding comforts through our Giggle Fund and enhancing their environment

The team had a very personal connection to Crumlin Hospital with a young daughter receiving emergency heart surgery from the hospital. Thus, the motivation to complete the challenge and raise even more funds was boosted. Letters from the CMRF Crumlin following the event and donation affirm impact fundraising has for the charity and the sick children they support.

Such was the success of the event that the team are planning to participate next year and hopefully expand the Hammerson participation. Having taken part this year, and finding out that 15 km is challenging, perhaps next year could see a little bit more pre-event preparation…

Congratulations to the Tony and the team on this amazing challenge and the huge donation to CMRF Crumlin, a very worthwhile cause.
