As we head into 2015 and start to look at new volunteering opportunities, I thought it would be helpful to share my experiences of one of the volunteer opportunities on offer.
I recently had the opportunity to participate in BOSS day (Building Opportunities Skills Seminar), a skills based workshop which helps students prepare for the world of work. With the support of staff, business volunteers act as facilitators sharing their knowledge and experiences to Year 10 and 11 students. This year the same organisation is running the Mock Interviews Day in Stratford. See the Community Day activity.
I was slightly anxious at being a “teacher for a day” however I was impressed with the organisation of the workshop as facilitators were well equipped; training and supplementary materials were provided.
The day kicked off with a brief introduction to the purpose of the day by the project manager and a series of actors’ workshops. The workshops meant the volunteers were able to have a much needed breather! I enjoyed the interactive nature of the workshops; often pausing to invite the students to answer questions.
My first session went well and I felt that the students had engaged well with all the activities. It also gave me a sense of how to approach the rest of the day. My second group were not quite as engaged but I guess the fact it was after lunch on the last day of term, might have had something to do with it! A few of them were more interested in taking ‘selfies’ and group photos as a reminder of the day - looking back I guess wearing business attire at school would have been somewhat of a “big deal”!
As the day progressed, I consciously took on an advisory role, inviting the students to address any concerns. Besides it was not too long ago that I was in their position. Lunch was a great opportunity to meet with the other business volunteers. We shared our thoughts on the first half of the day. I found out many had participated in the workshop before which is a testament to its continued success.
I would recommend others to take part in this year's BOSS day (Mock Interviews). Stepping out of your comfort zone is always a bit nerve-racking, but the rewards when you do are well worth it.
Most importantly, you never know how much your knowledge and experience could inspire and propel others to realising their ambitions and passions.
Do take a look at this year's BOSS day volunteer opportunity. I have a feeling it will be a more relaxed affair.
Good Luck!
