The festive period goes hand in hand with an increased level of consumption: we’re eating, drinking, buying and travelling more. This means it can have some of the greatest environmental impacts of the whole year.
Over the three festival days, our total consumption on food, travel, lighting and gifts could result in up to 650 kg of CO2 per person. This is the equivalent to the weight of 1,000 Christmas puddings or 5.5% of a total annual carbon footprint (Haq et al., 2018).
Without raining on your Christmas parade, it is a good time to stay mindful of the way small acts can have a big impact on your environmental footprint.
