What’s in season? May edition
It’s gonna be May. We are well on the way to summer – and we’ve already had a taster of the warm weather to come (finger’s crossed!). With the longer days and warmer temperatures it’s time bring out some new dishes which make the most of fresh produce.
Vegetables: asparagus, broccoli, carrots, jersey royal new potatoes, lettuce & salad leaves, new potatoes, peas, radishes, rocket, samphire, spinach, spring onions, watercress, wild nettles.
Herbs: basil, chervil, chives, coriander, dill, oregano, mint, nasturtium, parsley (curly), rosemary, sage, sorrel, tarragon
Fruit: bananas (Windward) [i], kiwi fruit [i], rhubarb, necatrine
Meat: lamb, wood pigeon
Fish: cod, crab, haddock, langoustine, plaice, prawns, salmon, sardines, sea trout, shrimp, whelks, whitebait
BBC Food has a whole page of seasonal recipe suggestions here.
My personal favourite recipe combines two in-season ingredients, new potatoes and spinach, into a delicious frittata – bonus, its vegetarian so don’t forget to bank your butterflies!
